As with many hospital systems, managing silos of information has become burdensome and time consuming. Jeff Paschell, integration manager for Cardiovascular Services at Cooper University Hospital, acknowledged the disconnect between departments and that “physician adoption, physician satisfaction and report turnaround time (TAT) were not where we wanted them to be” as a result.
Prior to 2011, no electrophysiology (EP) solution was well developed, according to Andrea Russo, MD, director of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Services at Cooper University Hospital. “We needed a system that could integrate the electronic health record (EHR) with the equipment in the EP laboratory to have access to all data in one location, avoiding redundancy and duplication,” she said.

Enter McKesson, who enjoys a long and successful relationship with the hospital system and invited Cooper University Hospital to enter a beta program for an EP solution.

Seamless Integration Proves a Winner
Dr. Russo advocated for a system that integrated EP data and electronic medical records (EMRs). The ability to meet regulatory requirements was also important. Prior to implementing the EP solution, they were dealing with a “paper mess” and manual data entry. The new process improves workflow significantly, she said.
Turnaround time, which used to take weeks, now happens within minutes. Nurses, EP physicians and referring physicians are impressed with the time savings, increased efficiency and greater accuracy made possible with this solution.
By working with McKesson, Cooper University Hospital was able to help shape a solution that integrates seamlessly into the same CVIS system used for other cardiac procedures throughout the facility.
